God's Perfect Plan

Bob has a little piece of logic for those who believe that everything is a part of God's perfect plan: If you pray to God to do something for you, you are effectively second-guessing God's perfect plan, asking him to alter it for you. People who pray must not have much faith in God's perfect plan. Callers aren't happy -- and a Lassiter favorite, Scott from Clearwater, calls in to explain that God does answer prayers.

Neil Rogers on the Phone

Neil Rogers calls in to talk to Bob and to Tampa Bay about the SOFAR campaign. This is a very different Neil Rogers than we'll hear later on WSUN, where he was combative but mostly riffed and bitched and schmoozed. The man we hear here is fiercely intellectual and articulate and passionate about this cause --- the man who so inspired Bob in his early days.

New Moon

No, this has nothing to do with Twilight, thank God for small favors. It's the night of an actual, astronomical new moon, and Bob theorizes (silently) that the rambling insanity he deals with on the nights of a full moon will also come out on a new moon. He's right.

Clergy on Clergy

Observing the fall of Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker and other of the wave of '80s televangelists, Bob wants to hear from the religious community -- which has always known they were charlatans but stood silently aside -- and he now offers them an open forum to call in and speak out against the televangelists. Would you be surprised to know that he has a hard time getting calls? (Oh -- and there's a little bit of looney commentary from the General.)

SOFAR: The Reaction

Bob takes calls from listeners who react against his SOFAR campaign with Neil Rogers. The callers are angry, and they make Bob even angrier. This is why the city of Tampa Bay tuned in every night.

Save Our First Amendment Rights

Bob outlines the FCC's April 1987 ruling against Howard Stern, and the SOFAR campaign founded by Neil Rogers. Essentially, a monologue about the perils of government censorship and how to combat it.

Mr. Airstream

"Ladies and gentlemen - you have just witnessed the greatest call ever made to a talk radio station anywhere in the world." As true today as it was then. If you only download one Bob Lassiter clip in your life, make it this one.

It Was A Record

An angry old lady who'd called in during the previous week's "Battle of the Bewildered" show calls in again to accuse Bob of lying the week before. Also a couple of other random, silly callers on an evening of open phones.

Battle of the Bewildered

(Photo: Terrence McKeever, right, and Cleveland Wheeler on the air at Q105)

A very popular aircheck. Bob is, ahem, "joined" in the studio by Tampa Bay radio personality and AA member Terrence McKeever for a night of open phones. Includes a searing monologue about Ronald Reagan and bizarre commentary from The General. Oh, and a very funny impression of David Fowler by Bob.

Col. Jack Burke

A discussion with Col. Jack Burke, a military expert, who has a long and fairly wonky discussion with Bob about military policy and strategy; weaponry, nuclear and otherwise; the arms industry; and various aspects of the Cold War. The program is then interrupted by President Reagan's Oval Office speech about Iran-Contra (not on the tape), after which Bob comes back to review the speech and take calls. It gets pretty heated.

Bible Debate

An epic discussion of the Bible with Bob holding court against two professors from Clearwater Christian College. It's not one of the more fiery religious debates Bob's so well known for, but a surprisingly scholarly and in-depth debate of Biblical text, history, geography, and interpretation. The most contentious moment comes not in their conversation, but a call from one of Bob's favorite callers, Tom from Lutz.

Open Phones: With the General

This is the first of the shows submitted to us by Keith Newman, who received them from a friend in Tampa who calls himself "The General." The General was/is insane, and you'll hear him talking/laughing/commentating over a night of Open Phones on the Bob Lassiter Show, one featuring a pretty hefty number of crackpots and weirdos even without The General.

Open Hate

Listeners are invited to call into the show and talk about which groups, ethnic or otherwise, they hate. He won't challenge their hate, he promises; nevertheless, as he puts it at the end, it's "an ugly show."

Talking to Young People

Bob, finding himself identifying more and more with young people as he matures, invites young people (strictly 30 and under) to call. Regular Lassiter listeners will know this format as a variation on his "Sense of the Audience" schtick, which essentially means the show is a poll of the youth of Tampa Bay. It's more interesting than it sounds, though.

George Joachim in the Studio

(Photo: WPLP building in Seminole, late '80s)

Probably the shortest clip in the archive, but this one is absolutely invaluable: It includes Bob's hapless, much-talked-about boss at WPLP, general manager George Joachim. We'd love to hear more of this show if you have it...

The $50,000 Giveaway

The most popular, most requested, probably most acclaimed show the Mad Dog ever broadcast. It's New Year's Day, 1987, and Bob rings in the New Year by announcing the new policy of giving away $50,000 to every person who calls the station, and an additional $10,000 to everyone listening. After all, there are rooms at the station filled with cash to give away. Say --- what's that voice in the background saying?

WPLP 8th Birthday Party

WPLP's 8th birthday party was a live broadcast by the regular weekday air staff -- Lassiter, David Fowler, Tim Coles, and John Eastman, with news/program director Don Richards moderating -- from WestShore Plaza in Tampa. Audio quality isn't great, but as far as content this is probably one of our best clips -- the contentious feisty debate that the more famous "WFLA Battle of the Talk Show Hosts" wasn't.

Tim Coles in the Studio

(Photo: Tim Coles on the air at WPLP.)

Lassiter's WPLP archrival, Tim Coles, comes into the studio with a peace offering/engagement gift, and Bob invites him to stick around and talk about the just-completed Florida gubernatorial debate with Bob and the callers. A good show, though with inconsistent sound quality.

Fowler Calls In

(Photo: David Fowler in the 1990s. Please excuse the fake antlers; it's the only verified Fowler photo we could find.)

David Fowler calls in to correct Bob's "near pathetic ignorance of history." One wonders if either of them ever found out that in fact, Lassiter was right and Fowler wrong.

Saturday Night Show

A 20-minute segment from one of Bob's oft-complained-about, rarely heard Saturday night shows at WPLP in 1986. It's a schmooze fest, including some banter about the single life, Norman Rockwell, the Bible, and an unfortunate cut-off as Bob's telling the story of his first job as a talk-show host.

Before the Bob Lassiter Christmas shows, there was this: Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, as performed by the staff of WPLP and broadcast Christmas Eve, 1985. Bob plays The Ghost of Christmas Present. Also on hand are future wife Mary as Mrs. Cratchit, and David Fowler narrating.

WPLP 7th Birthday Party

(Pictured: The WPLP Remote Van.)

Let's call this a dry run for re-starting this as the Bob Lassiter Airchecks site, and to try it we're starting with our oldest and rarest clip: Bob Lassiter and David Fowler on the air for the 1985 WPLP birthday celebration at the Bay Area Outlet Mall in Clearwater.

For Lassiter fans, this one has an awful lot of fascinating moments: David Fowler mentions being "the most popular host on the station" (Bob had only been there for 3 months at the time); Lassiter mentions that this is his first time ever meeting soon-to-be-nemesis Tim Coles; and he has an on-air chat with another WPLP employee he doesn't know too well, a woman named Mary Turner.

(If you've got other airchecks from around this time, please email us!)
